Huntington Pier

Went down to Huntington Beach the other day, Ron got to surf while I relaxed on the shore. Was able to catch a lavender sunset and recharge the mental batteries. Hope everyone had a nice & relaxing weekend! Post by: Leila 030209 Listening to: Love Bites-Def Leopard |

Hana Harrison Does it Again!
It was NSSA Hawaii at Haleiwa this weekend and guess what? Our team rider Hana Harrison was surfing super well AGAIN! It was windy and cold (for Hawaii) making super tricky to surf but Hana adjusted to the condition and took 1st in the Open Women division AND 2nd in Explore Women division!

I forgot to blog about it but she got 1st in HSA contest a couple of weeks ago as well. This girl is unstoppable!
When I approached her to ride for BayVI, I knew she was good but for anyone to be this consistant is just insane!
Awesome job Hana!

BAYVI's Kainoa Haas Victorious

Source: www.surfline.com
Kainoa was our first grom we picked up from the beginnings of time when BAYVI was but a baby. I had my
eye on this kid from the start. I still remember our first conversation when we first met. It was right after I
dropped in on him on a fun overhead day at Ala Moana Bowls. : ) Kainoa claims I dropped in on him.
I tell him it was an intentional drop-in to serve as the icebreaker to talk to him. The truth will never be
known. haha
Since then, Kainoa has become a brother to me, as has the rest of the team and BAYVI family. From
coming over to help fold shirts to being our photoshoot man, we would not be where BAYVI is without
this 'mang.' I can't count how many times he has won first in so many non-final heats; he's won 1st at the
State Championship Air Show, but this First Final victory was the one we've been waiting for.
Congratulations Kainoa.
I dug up a few old photos from the archives. You can see the 'mang' in him from when he was but a little
boy:

Circa 2004. Pipeline. Still remember the day when Wade Tokoro was kind enough to invite Kainoa to
spend the night and then took him around the next day on his board runs to meet Fanning, Taj, and Parko.
Thank you Wade.

Circa 2005. Kainoa meets another mang. Chris joins the team. Still remember this day. We all surfed the
Pufferfish series, went surfing somewhere else after, and the car got broken into and their prizes were
jacked. But for some reason, we still had a good time surfing.
Congratulations Kainoa!

Hunger & Love
It's 12:29 am, just passed Tuesday night and feeling inspired. How's the 6A doing? You may be reading this on your
phone, computer, at work, or at school, and I hope all is well. Just got off the TV from watching Obama's
presidential address to Congress tonight. I have to admit, that guy sure has a smooth way with words. (And
I thought that inspirational speech by the President in the movie Independence Day was good...you know the
part before they shot down the aliens...)...Anyway, Obama makes even that look easy.
Some recently criticize Mr. President for trying to take on too many things. But the more I think about it...I
don't see anything wrong with ambition and commitment. Why not dream big? Why not go for what you believe in?
Otherwise, what do we choose to define ourselves with? It's the very core principle that started this brand and
this company, and it's the same charactistic that is so inspiring to see in other people--Seeing people believing
in something, and following it through with passion.
Speaking of going for it, we had a chance to watch a few bands give it their all last night. There are a few spots
around town with free shows and we had a chance to drive down and catch one in Silverlake last night.

This night coincided with this group's CD release party, and a night they're sure to remember.
In a weird and comforting way, watching bands follow their passions reminds us of what we go through
with BAYVI. We started this based on a belief, an ideal: A common connection that we all share and are
striving for. Whatever your passion may be, it's what draws us together in a common cause. We push
because we believe. Every day comes with its own package and rollercoasters of emotion. And day by day,
it's happening. From a small brand that started out 4 years ago in a bedroom in Hawaii to now a global
brand with an office and new distribution center, we push.
Thanks to your support and belief. Thanks from everybody who's been with us from day 1. Here we go.
Here's to your passions and hunger.

Off to Vegas: MAGIC Trade Show

Today, we packed up the cars and made the 3-4 hour drive from LA to the capital of Sin. Twice a year,
the collectives of the apparel world gather together in Las Vegas...some to mingle, some to showcase
their latest work, some to gamble, some to hustle and work, others to party, and some successfuly
managing to do all of the above.

What was supposed to be a three-hour tour with the movie star, the Professor and Mary Ann...turned
into a 6 hour all-lanes-closed-parking lot on the I-15 Northbound from an exploding fuel tanker.
Dude above stretching his legs on the freeway, reminded me of a scene straight out of Independence Day.
We've now safely arrived in Vegas, getting ready for tomorrow.
More to come, stay tuned.

Sev Smith Returns from the Mentawais
Aloha everybody. Sev returned from a trip to the Mentawais on a three-part mission: 1) To surf your
brains out, 2) to have the privilege of studying surf journalism from two of Surfer Magazine's living
journalism legends: Sam George and Matt George, and 3) to surf your brains out.
We just got off the phone with Sev and received this email from the shark-man himself: Makes you
want to book a ticket to the Mentawais right now...

TeamVI_Sev Smith Says: "The boat we traveled in, the D'Bora, was sort of like the Black Pearl.
Everywhere we went, the other boats decided to leave. This shot is from an all-day session with no other
boats at Macaronis. I surfed from 8-12, 12:30-2:30, and 3-6. The teachers let us have a solid day off,
leaving my eyes sunburned. But totally worth it."

"Even though part of the trip was learning about Surf Journalism, we were allowed countless cutback
hours."

"This is the illegal fishing boat that crashed into Padang Padang in Bali. Well check this: my friends
and I were in Bali when it happened, and we watched it crash the night it ran into the reef. We were the
first guys to surf "The Bow," as we called it. You could actually get barrelled by the bow and touch the
hull."

"Barrelled, tubed ,slotted, shacked, covered, or chillin in the green room with my little green shorts
and sunglasses. Who doesn't want to write about that? Surf Journalism at its finest."

"A little fin-release to release the stress of studying in the Mentawais."

"I'm a devout goofy-foot. Although I learned a huge deal from Matt and Sam George, seven-foot Lances
Rights made me learn, real fast, about how to ride backside tubes. This...is learning."

"Some more hands-on learning, courtesy of the Indian ocean and the inside reef at HT's: dubbed,
'The Surgeon's Table.'"

Nice to finally meet you.
!! found this tree comfortably hidden amongst a sea full of mini vans and soccer moms. I couldn't seem to wrap my mind around the fact it was actually here in this strange location, but it was and I was happy to finally see it blossoming in person for the first time. Took a few Polaroids. The click and whirrr of the old camera drew a few strange looks from little girls dressed in uniforms and knee pads. I sat back on the faded winter grass and enjoyed the soft shower of pink rain-like petals. ------------ Sakura is a Japanese word derived from the word Sakuya, which means "blooming". The flowers are said to be symbolized as a metaphor for life. Brief, ephemeral, brilliant blooms followed by the inevitable fall.
In 1912 Japan gave 3,020 Sakura trees to the United States as a gift to their then-growing friendship. These trees were planted in Manhattan's Sakura Park and along the shore of Washington D.C's Tidal Shore. 3,800 trees were gifted again by Japan (to the U.S) in 1965. Of the trees Balboa Park of Los Angeles has 2,000! I can't even begin to imagine seeing that many Cherry Blossom trees. Now I just need perfect timing. *Crossing my fingers*

It's cold again. The weather went from 80 degrees and sunny to 50 degrees and rainy in one day. I really shouldn't complain, the rain washes the city clean of the smog and film that blankets the city and cities around it. It makes for such an amazing view. I decided to take advantage of the wonderful winter air and head to the park, cause obv i'm in love with the cold-weather blooms going on right now. :)

Happy Birthday & Congratulations Hana!
Happy Birthday Hana!
Our team rider Hana Harrison turned 18 last Friday and what a weekend she had.

NSSA Hawaii's 4 star contest was at Sandy beach over the weekend and Hana kicked a$$! She got 2nd in both Open and Explore Women's divisions.

I personally think Hawaii has the best surfers and for our team rider Hana to place 2nd in both divisions is just unreal!
Awesome job Hana and happy birthday!
