This winter sure has been a funny one. We haven't seen as many wave-producing storm systems marching across the Pacific as we normally see this time of year. Maybe its global warming. Pipe hasn't been the 10 foot perfection that we were expecting for this year's contest, but 4 foot dredging barrells over a foot of sharp reef ensures an exciting contest, and exciting it has been.
This year our friends from Japan were invited to surf the Pipeline Pro, and we were down to show our support. For those in Japan, you may recognize these guys, including Minetou Ushikoshi and the Ogawa Brothers, holding things down and representing with pride for Japan.
Insert sponsor shot here. Thanks to those who support our surf/skate communities.

BAYVI x Brice Surfboards
What a treat today. BAYVI surfer shaper BRICE YAMASHITA stopped by the BAYVI offices today and unveiled his latest and greatest new board model. A freshly shaped board with nice, clean lines, and man the guys over here are anxious in line waiting to give it a spin.
Big Ups to Brice, going out of his way to get this board over to us, and we're passing it around letting everybody have an equal chance to give it a go. Had the lucky honors to give it the inaugural session at a clean session at DHead and the board is so fun!
Right now the team guys got it reserved for 2 weeks at a time, if you're a Sixth Alliance member and would like to give it a spin, send us an email to

Hickam Contest / 84 Contest. Tis the season to Skate.
Ho, ho, and a ho. Tis the season to skate. No matter what side of the island you live, there's been a contest going on. North Shore Banzai Skatepark, Aala Park, Hickam AFB. Big ups to Tim Jackson taking home top honors (the guy's been on it!) at Yesterday's 84 Contest at Aala and Nick Yamasato at the Turkey Bowl Shootout at Hickam. Just passed the anniverary of our day of infamy, when the hangars at Hickam at Pearl Harbor were under fire. Now the hangars are experiencing a whole new explosion of young up and comers.

Nick Mita Wins the BAYVI Bui Pro
BUI time y'all, and this year's lineup was just as fierce as ever.
Amateurs paired side by side with seasoned pros in a 'no guts no glory'
free for all for the coveted BAYVI bui winner's medal and top honors.
Better eat your wheaties son, because we like to root for the underdogs
and it's all about giving the dedicated guys out there a shot at taking
down some heavy hitters and invited pros. Think of it like Rocky Balboa given a shot to
take out champ Apollo Creed, subsitute hot dogs for egg yolk, and we're
ready to roll.
With last year's winner Kainoa Haas training to defend his title, nobody was a match for this year's champ Nick Mita flying back from Japan ready to kamikaze his way with no mercy on nobody. "I've been wanting to win one of these for a while now, I finally won one **** yeah."
Good on you Mr. Mita on a job well done. Keep that trophy in good shape now, because next year there's gonna be a lot of hungry hands wanting to take that away from your cozy shelf...
Congrats to finalists 2nd Place Jared Clapper, 3rd Gregg Nakamura, and 4th Gopal Butler and to the bui committee holding things down true and consistent.
Check out the pics below. Enjoy.

The Joe Dub Music Story
(**Underground hip-hop artist Joe Dub is the man responsible for the music beats you're listening to on our www.bayvi.com website. (Track1 and 2: Joe Dub, Track 3: Painkillers, consisting of Joe Dub and Topic.) If you like it, support their music. Read on and find out more.)
The Joe Dub Story
The iridescent glow slowly vanishes, only to be followed by a final trail of smoke. The cigarette takes its last breath. The glow in the tray fades much like the final moments of an old TV monitor I used to have when I was a kid. One, dial knob to change station, two, dial knob to change volume, three, push to extinguish. A bright glow, burning away.
Like a lens adjusting its field, the graveyard of ash fades to peripheral and the wall of record shelves behind now crisp-clear from blurred nothingness. I notice shelves upon shelves of music albums, records, beats. I begin to think how each black disc encapsulates an individual story expressed by cadences and rhythms rather than print and touch. How much energy, pain, joy, sweat, smiles went into making each disc. What do they each mean? What are their stories?
"Let's do it again. And wait for the change-up," I hear the words
like a distant murmer, as if I was underwater observing a conversation.
I snap out of my phase, check my watch, it's 3AM. I'm sitting next to
underground hip-hop artist Topic, and we're here to do the story of Joe
Dub. While most people are dreaming of four-legged fluffy,
fence-hopping animals, he's in the midst of recording his new album,
"Pooretry". In him, I see a passion and a drive you don't see in many
people, the tireless approach and commitment to the truths of their
lives. It's an undying, uncompromising passion doing what you love.
We relate to it well, because we do the same with BAYVI.
Joe emerges from the array of wires, empty bottles of beer, keyboards,
and a clean white monitor with a fruit logo showing lines stacked upon
lines as if the big one earthquake finally hit. He grabs a beer, takes
a seat, and begins to share a little Q&A for the Joe Dub Story:
Hometown:
Born and raised in San Francisco....currently reside in Kaneohe, Hawaii and San Francisco.
You've been respected in the scene for a good time now, but give us a quick run-down on how it all got started:
It started as a hobby in 1985, makin songs just to do it. Then around 1990 it got more serious as the independent scene in the bay area was starting to bubble. People were doing major shows and getting deals with smaller local indies but with world wide distribution. So myself and the group I was with at the time decided to take it one step further and manufacture and release our product ourselves, and build our own relationships with distributors, and well...since then....it's just grown....passion over fashion!!!! I love it.
Artists who've influenced you growing up?
Charles Mingus/Earth Wind and Fire/Mandrill/Pete Nice(3rd bass)/Just Ice/Schooly D/JVC Force/Led Zeppelin/Blue Oyster Cult/Doobie Brothers/Frank Zappa and about a few thousand more!
Where do you get your inspiration from now?
The unfolding world around me....be it directly in front of my face, or world events from abroad, music wise. I'd say right now: lab waste....lazer sword...ex-vandalz
So you just got back from tour, and getting ready for another...what's next for Joe Dub?
Yeah we just did Canada to promote an album me and Canadian producer Factor did entitled "Live in '75" and currently i'm in San Fran working on a new album...and getting ready to drop another one called "Pooretry" which is set to drop in early november...and right now i'm planning a tour in Europe in early-mid '08 to promote both albums....i'm just trying to keep busy
Favorite thing to pass the time when not working on music?
I'd have to say ....i'm always doing something music related, there's no other way i'd have it. But i definitely enjoy doing grown up things....and watching sports....drinking is definitely up there as well...hah.... But music is definitely the heart that keeps my blood flowing!! Without it I'd be useless...so it's always right there on deck if not at the plate!
Myspace: A blessing or the devil?
I'll take the easiest way out and say both: Good to help spread the gospel...but bad because now everyone is somebody...haha If that makes any sense....i'm speaking musically here....but yeah it's a great promotions vehicle for sure!
So tell us about your latest album? Any collaborations?
The current album "live in '75" dropped in July....it's me along with Factor......on Side Road Records...it's basically a wide mix of many styles and sounds--i'd say my most complete album to date. It features a few of my regulars partners in crime such as....ellay khule/topic/awol one/mestizo/dj marz as well as a handful of canadian mc's such as kay the aquanaut/cam the wizzard and nolto...
And as far as walk in record stores:
In Hawaii it's available at Prototype and Stylus.
In SF and LA your best bet would be Amoeba and San Mateo Zoo.
Anywhere else in the world or states.....pretty much any mom and pop should be carrying it...And if anybody out there reading this hasn't seen it at their local music supplier please feel free to either urge them to carry our product or email me with your store’s information and we'll be sure to have them fully stocked within days...i can be reached at
This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
Final shout outs:
Instead of naming people and leaving some out ....i'll keep it simple.....peace to all my friends...family....and fans...and of course BAYVI!!!

BAYVI x DOC Keep the Country Country Fundraiser Tee Releases Now
BAYVI teams up with Defend Oahu Coalition to bring you the collaborative KEEP THE COUNTRY COUNTRY Fundraiser Tee. AVAILABLE NOW.
Buy a shirt, save a beach. Your support saves our community.
Those of us here at BAYVI have released another shirt you can be damn proud of. We’ve teamed up with the folks over at KEEP THE COUNTRY COUNTRY to bring you the exclusive BAYVI x D.O.C. collaborative fundraiser tee. 20% of all proceeds are donated to KEEP THE COUNTRY COUNTRY.
The last I checked, most of us can’t afford lamborghinis, we don’t buy multi-million dollar estates, and we can’t individually donate millions to put a stop to Turtle Bay wiping out Kawela Bay and taking over the North Shore, our beaches, our skate parks, and our breaks. But we do buy shirts. And everytime you do, we’ll go ahead and make a 20% donation for you.
For more info on how else you can get involved with the Keep the Country Country campaign, check out Defend Oahu Coalition’s site at www.defendoahucoalition.org
