Chiller Whales Making A Splash

cw.jpg
"One good thing about music, is when it hits you feel no pain."

Writing music is something special, but performing live in front of a hundred people who are dancing and
having a great time off of what you've created is something on its own.  The Chiller Whales had the chance
to play at a pub in San Luis Obispo called "Frog And Peach".  We had an insane time.  The crowd loved
the vibe, and the bar actually ran out of beer. Good night, ah?!  If you'd like to check out our stuff, visit
www.myspace.com/chillerwhales, our Facebook fan page, or our YouTube channel.

To all you musicians out there, keep up your hard work.  Music is a beautiful thing.

Aloha,
Sev

Hello Sergey Levin from Russia

Recently, we've been receiving messages from Sergey Levin of Russia.  Sergey is a BAYVI 6A Member
we're proud to have on board as he contributes to the 6A from across the globe.

I wish I could meet Sergey in person.  Wouldn't mind grabbing a beer with the guy.  I've enjoyed talking to
him over email, and look forward to one day when the BAYVI 6A members from down the street to an
ocean away can gather in one place, hang out, and meet each other.

Hearing from the BAYVI 6A really is the best part of BAYVI:  We love receiving your emails, your feedback,
your contributions, and your blog posts.  It really is a collective effort from each one of us, together, that is
making this happen.  It never ceases to amaze me how the 6A has grown, one day at a time and one
member at a time, into a movement that we each can identify with and relate to in our own way.

BAYVI resonates around a central mantra:  Passion and the everpresent need to get back to basics.
What are your basics?

BAYVI family, meet Sergey:

"My name is Sergey.  I was born in Russia.  Do you understand what that's mean?...I was a creative child.
Seven years ago I knew the skateboarding. It changed all my life. I was skating all the time, did it very
powerful, but I broke my leg 4 times. Now we make a contests in my city."

Mother Nature Commands Respect

Mother Nature will always win.  As I'm sure we all know, the earth unleashed a powerful 8.8 earthquake
on Chile this past weekend, undoubtedly bringing back references to the 9.5 Chile quake and Pacific
Tsunamis of 1960.  Our thoughts go out to those in Chile, the rescue efforts, and a speedy recovery.

Mother nature is an amazing force.  As surfers, we are all too familiar with the power She reigns.  Whether
you've been the victim of a Sandy Beach shorebreak thrashing, a board-breaking set wave at Gas Chambers,
or getting sucked over the falls onto skin-cutting reef at Velzyland, you are all too familiar (and humbled) by
the power She wields.

No matter how tuned your board is, no matter what shape you're in, or no matter how good you are, Mother
Nature will always win.

Surfing is unique in the sense that it centers in a completely uncontrolled environment.  There are no foul
lines, no domes, no referees, and no opponent but yourself.  The greatest surfers of our time have been
those who are best at matching their energy with what Mother Nature decides to offer.  It is no wonder that
the best surfers share a common belief:  Align yourself to what the wave will do, not align the wave to what
you will do.

Now if you really wanted to get philosophical, perhaps we can apply this same lesson to our own lives?

This weekend, while watching the webcams and live coverage of the Tsunami, it boggled my mind how an
the effects of an event in one spot of the world can be seen and felt halfway around the globe.

045_1.jpg
Hilo Bay Live stream.  1 minute before the Tsunami.

045_2.jpg
The ocean is draining.  Hilo Bay turns into a fast receding river, 1 minute into the Tsunami.

045_3.jpg
In a matter of minutes, the bay floor is exposed and dry.  To be followed by a rush of ocean water.

As if this wasn't enough evidence of Her power, thirty minutes before the tsunami arrived, all the whales
in Maui left the shallow bays for deeper waters.

Be safe, happy surfing, and do our part to take care of our planet.

New Product Sneak Peak

Another teaser photo of upcoming product releases.  Stay tuned for release date schedules.

The yet-to-be-released BAYVI 'PIERS' tee.

From Hawaii to Huntington Beach, CA, Duke Kahanamoku brought the spirit of surfing to the mainland.
Duke's ambassadorship of surfing throughout California is often represented by his iconic statue at
Huntington Beach.

This design was based on a photo of the legendary Huntington Beach pier.  I still remember when we took
this photo.  It was taken during the California fires in 2009, which resulted in some pretty dramatic sunsets.
I love how the low clouds and the bird soaring towards the lifeguard tower add to the shot.

Wow. HELLO, WORLD! It's been a while. I'm still playing catch up on these photos I took in Hawaii over
a month ago. These are from Lanikai, one of my favorite beaches on Oahu. Looking at these photos right
now makes me wish I were there. Los Angeles just experienced some pretty heavy rain and flooding, so
fine-white sandy beaches, blue skies, puffy white hawaiian clouds, bikini weather and local food sound
almost heavenly to me. Actually, they sound heavenly to me no matter what the circumstance : ). A girl
can dream...

Hope everyone is enjoying their week. Anyone have any photo submissions or photos/videos they'd just
like to share? We always love seeing the world through a different perspective and getting to know you
readers a little better!

My new board

There's just something about getting a brand new board.  I'm not sure if it's the fresh smell of the cured
resin or the white dust that shakes off it like a powdered christmas tree.  Maybe it's just the feel of the
board under your arm as you say hello to your new friend.

I find it fascinating how a white blank of memory foam can be scuplted into a vessel of freedom.  How
many memories await you?  How many bottom turns?  Off the lips?  And maybe on a lucky
day--an open barrel will this board provide?

Getting a new board is a ritualistic experience all in itself.  It reminds me of when I was small and was
lucky enough to score a pack of Upper Deck baseball cards.  You carefully peel back the foil wrapping.
You cherish each moment like Charlie would a chocolate bar.

d2_7.jpg

Brice Surfboards Mochi Rocket : 6'1" x 18.5" x 2 1/4"

The new board ritual begins:

You stare, you hold, and you examine.
Do you spray artwork or do you leave it clean?
If you spray artwork, do you block paint with masking tape or dishwashing liquid?
What stickers will you put and where do you position them?
Apply deckpad, and begin your first criss-cross patterns of wax.
Attach fins, attach leash cord, leash.

BAYVI Teamrider Brice Yamashita has shaped a magic board for me.  Turns on a dime, rails are tapered
just right, and I had a chance to bring it to California on our recent trip back to Hawaii.

Many thanks go to Brice and Brice Surfboards for their fine craftsmanship.  It's been an honor to have Brice
as part of the BAYVI family, and it's inspiring to see people dedicated to their passions.  Passion is the
fundamental reason why we started BAYVI, and it will always permeate through every experience you have
with us.

I get to meet Shawn (BAYVI Texas Manager) on Saturday.  It's been a busy few weeks and getting excited
at a chance to surf on my new Brice Surfboard in Newport to catch the incoming NW swell.

How do you prepare your board?
Send in your board artwork photos and let's get it posted up.
