Good morning. I'd like to begin this morning's blog with a few thoughts about spatial reality.
What is it about the human pysche that promotes a desire for space?
Spatial harmony. Photo by: Leila | BAYVI
While surfing a routine pre-work surf session this morning, I started observing the tendencies
of human
nature when it comes to spatial distance. I began this morning's surf session with only one other guy in
the water. We said hello, exchanged pleasantries, and talked about the swell. But for some reason, neither
of us sat right next to the other. But why is it that an hour later when 40 guys were out in a quickly-crowded
lineup, we could literally touch elbows with people sitting next to us? What once was considered awkward
instantly became socially acceptable. It's an interesting phenomenon of the human psyche. One could say
almost an inverse relationship between quantity and space.
Perhaps it's a similar explanation as to why you don't sit directly next to somebody in a movie theater when
the rest of the theater is empty. Or why you don't use the bathroom stall next to a person when other stalls
are available. It's an unspoken bubble: an unspoken understanding and need for space.
Is it just America? Can part of it be cultural? Research shows that an average American's personal space
requirement is twice that of any other culture. Any recent trip to Japan and you'll notice that strangers
have little qualms about crowded lines and faciltiies.

But more than just a cultural phenomenon, one can find that spatial zones exist in all people. Surfing
lineups in Japan have similar charactistics to those of the US. It's interesting how spatial patterns and
behavior can apply differently in various scenarios, but nonetheless they do exist.
Which leads us to think, how do spatial patterns influence good design?
When you look at a t-shirt graphic, a website layout, a business card layout, or an advertisement layout,
what subconscious elements exist that render a positive reaction in your mind?
Spatial patterns may be one of the most-discussed subjects in the design rooms here at BAYVI. It's an
intriguing and important subject, as spatial elements play
an often overlooked and underrated role in
creating a nice aesthetic. Instead of designing and focusing on the lines and elements that speak, what
about placing an emphasis on the unspoken space that surrounds?
The timeless design of the Beatles' White Album Cover, utilizing space to its fullest.

If this holds true for visual design, would not the same hold true for the composition of music? For art?
For photography? The more one thinks about it, the more one realizes that spatial harmony surrounds us.
What defines beauty and aesthetics may instead come down to a question of what defines space.
So the next time you look at a photograph, the next time you buy a graphic tee, or the next time you listen
to your favorite song, you may find it fascinating to see all the subtle workings of space that comprise
good design.
Or the next time you get to surf in waves as epic as this by yourself, you will most definitely appreciate the
wonderful workings of space. [Photo credit: Scott Crumrine]

We're Baaack!
Good morning to the crew. We are back! Back from the semi-annual circuit of trade shows, that is: a
journey that started in Vegas, then moved to Huntington, down to San Diego, and most recently, Japan.
And now we are back at the BAYVI offices. Sure we love hotels, motels, trains, and the sights & sounds, but
sometimes there's nothing quite like the comfort of your own bed and your daily routine of reality television
before you sleep.
How has everybody been? The past few weeks have been a bit of a blur. I recall stories of Shawn (or
'Swanny,' depending on daytime or nighttime) on the sidewalk of San Diego guarding his scattered ATM
bills like a hungry scavenger, Sev working his dance skills at the BAYVI booth for the amused passerbys,
learning about George's childhood stories of broken windows and self-taught repair skills, the Local Motion
crew checking back in to visit Leila, and stories of Kaz's college house that sounded straight like a scene
taken from Old School.
So where do we begin?
I'll start by posting up photos from the past few weeks. We also have a number of 6A member posts that
will be coming up as well. Bear with us, as we are sorting through 400+ messages and got a bit to get
caught up on.
Here's a photo from the CLASS Trade Show Floor:

A few snapshots in & around Vegas.
Convention center for the Magic Trade Show.
The fires over in Los Angeles carried smoke over to Vegas, and as far as Denver and Utah! It also made

Walls of Fire
Hope everybody is staying safe. There have been some crazy
fires in Los Angeles. Walls of 100 ft flames covering the
mountains and filling the air with smoke.
Please take care wherever you may be. We just arrived in Vegas
for the MAGIC Apparel trade show convention. Will post more
photos soon.

Design + Production
Good Saturday morning to the crew. While mother nature's been rather quiet in California, our friends
in Asia have been on the receiving end of a fury of typhoons, an earthquake, fires, floods, and tsunami
threats. Hawaii also had a hurricane threat for a few days last week. Maybe it's Mother Nature's reminder
that she calls the shots. Please take care.
Things are always busy, but seem to have been extremely busy as of late! Design and production
have been in full gear these days at the BAYVI Production Center. We've been collaborating on a lot of
exciting new projects and I'm excited to share those with you as the projects come closer to fruition.
Pre-screen prepwork. Taken earlier this week.
We've been working with a number of you on featured design work and it's always a great pleasure to
collaborate with different minds. If you have any drawings or design ideas, hit us up and let's move this
forward together.
I'll end this post with a shot taken at the Chinatown Metro Station the other week. Hop on a bus or train,
see where it goes. Sometimes you find some unexpected surprises.
Enjoy your weekend. Go live your life.

TeamVI Cole Yamakawa Update: Haircut!
Hey guys,
I came home today from helping my grandma with some yard work when I realized how hot it really was!
First thought that came to mind was a hair cut!!! But too bad my mom wasn't home, so my alternate hair
stylist was... my brother. So he went to work with the shaver and I was helplessly watching my beautiful
locks of hair fall to the bathroom floor. He started with a bowl cut which didn't turn out well, then he started
randomizing it and this is how it came out. Don't worry, I'm gonna shave it all off once my parents see it.
One afternoon with a crazy haircut, how bad could it be... enjoy the pictures. My bro says it'll be the new
style once everybody sees it, ya right!

Teamrider Cole Yamakawa update
Over the weekend there was a NSSA contest at Lahaina, Maui. I was here in Oahu and couldn't be on Maui
to support Cole but he did really well up there!
Here's an email i got from him!
Yo dawgs (haha, just kiddin I didn't turn into a gangsta)
Good news! I came back Sunday evening from the NSSA event on Maui at lahaina harbor. I made it to the
semi's in the open juniors devision. And the next day, I worked my way up to the final in the explorer juniors
division, (15-17 "the big rippers"). Unfortunately, I encountered my brother in my first & second heat, haha.
Happy / sad to say I took him out in the semi's. The final was pretty stacked. I'm bummed I came in last...
even though I thought I did a bit better. But I'm stoked over all, this was my first NSSA final!
shoooots!
- cole
Great job Cole! I have a feeling he's gonna be a familiar face in the NSSA finals.
btw, don't ask me what the Yamakawa brothers were doing on the second photo... i have no idea either.
They must've really loved the stock rims on their rental jeep. ha ha

Down the Halls of FIDM
Good morning to the crew. How is the 6A? A few quick updates on the VI:
-Yesterday, Chad, Frank, Brandon, and the crew came back from the their Surf Trip to El Salvador.
Picked them up from the airport yesterday, and by looking at their photos, they scored. Sat down
over a double-double combo as they shared stories of peeling 100 yard right point-breaks,
half-sober tour guides, and getting stuck on connecting flights with 'Take A Chance Airlines'. We'll have
photos posted on here of their journeys shortly.
-BAYVI continues to grow in Hawaii, San Diego, Orange County, Japan, the UK, and now the Gulf Region.
VI_Shawn has been planting the VI_seeds and building things with the same ground-up approach that
we stick by: one 6A member at a time. For those new to the 6A, welcome to the family.
-Leila's new photobook for the BAYVI linesheets came out sick. Her creativity, her intuition, and her individual
sense never cease to amaze me. I would love to show you guys the new linesheets now, but that might ruin
the surprise of our yet-to-be-released items coming soon! As the most interesting man in the world would
say, "Stay thirsty my friends."
-Had the fine pleasure of seeing Kaz, Hana, Joe Dub, Chad O., Frank, Chad, Koki, and Hiroshi as they
came by the BAYVI warehouse and Offices. It's always great to see old friends!
-BAYVI Outwear samples came in with our final modifications. Production is in full swing and stay tuned
as we prepare to release our upcoming BAYVI sweatshirts, hoodies, etc. George and Bruce have been
working their magic bringing the BAYVI design sketches and concepts to a tangible reality.
-Design of the BAYVI Summer 2010 Line is in full swing.
-Last week, we had a visit down the halls of the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in Los
Angeles:
FIDM
Many creative minds have walked these halls.
Keep the photo submissions coming. Hope everybody is doing well.
See you guys around.

88 MPH
Good morning to the crew. To our faithful readers, I'd like to start this Monday morning and pose a
question that we were discussing in the BAYVI offices just earlier:
"Why 88 miles per hour?"
Back to the Future. DeLorean. The all-powerful flux capacitor.
How did they decide on 88 miles per hour as the necessary speed for time warp? Why not make it a cool
100? It's like the carpool/HOV violation fine. Why is it $374? Why not make it a clean $375?
Email us with your thoughts.
And if you're wondering how this random conversation started, Bruce said he saw a UFO in the sky
earlier as we were driving, which led to this topic of discussion.
