Change
"Discontent is the progress of a man or a nation" -Oscar Wilde
Today we were flipping through the channels, (a routine usually starting at channel 117 and then working upwards), until "WTF?" caught our eye. A lot of folks in California have been upset at the Prop8 ban and dutifully exercising their right to protest. And this has got to be one of the most effective protest banners I've seen.
Change surrounds us. I never thought I'd seen the three-letter WTF acronym used by our elder generation. OMFG to that. But then again, I never thought I'd hear my own parents ask me in my lifetime, "Did you see hear of the new Ipod mini that Apple is gonna release?" Surprise is good.
Speaking of change, there's been a flurry of new activity under the BAYVI roof. We all find ourselves consumed by an endless, addicting cycle driven on the philosophy that complacency is forbidden. New products need to be made, new designs drafted, unique innovations crafted, and new ways of thinking to be explored.
One of our biggest changes is our new BAYVI Distribution Center in Los Angeles. It's the perfect complement to our home and the BAYVI Headquarters in Hawaii. I remember when I delivered the first box of BAYVI apparel to Aala Park Boardshop back in 2005. I remember when I sat down with Gregg Nakamura and asked him to be our first BAYVI teamrider. And I definitely remember the days Leila and I slept on the floor of a makeshift warehouse surrounded by boxes in the promise of a brighter tomorrow. The new distribution center is definitely a welcomed change. We'll be posting photos of the new facility, offices, and warehouse-- stay tuned for those. Today: -Leila designed a sick hoodie to add to our upcoming collection. We would post it, but that would ruin the surprise of course. -George has been in contact with our new factories. These guys got top-level programs in place and we're excited to see what we can collaborate with them on. -Bruce worked his magic on the screens today: cleaning, prepping, and getting us ready for our next production run. It's always cool to see the process from start to finish. It never ceases to amaze me how a single mental image can be transferred to ink, through a screen, onto a fabric and realized as a representation of the brand as a whole. If you sit and really think about it...a single shirt is much more than a design--it represents hours, breakthroughs, innovation, struggle, and passion mixed into one. -Kaz has been holding things strong in the Hawaii homeland, helping us add a new teamrider to the mix. -Sunshine placed second in the Hickam skate contest. -Kays was at home watching Mean Girls and amused. -Leila and I were also watching Mean Girls and were also amused. -Brice met up with Glenn Pang to discuss board design and is working on the BAYVI x Brice Yamashita Surfboards collaboration. -Ushikoshi brought out a pin-tail board from the closet for the large NW swell hitting Japan. Sneak preview shot of our Holiday Line, yet to be released. FIVE-O shirt paired with black HNL fitted hat by BAYVI.
From those who have been with us from day one to those joining the 6A just yesterday, welcome aboard. Here's to never being complacent.
Good night, Aloha.
